Thanks in part to Labor Day promotions, nationwide lower gasoline prices and higher light-truck demand, September boasted healthy sales, with a rise of 16% compared to the previous month.

According to a recent report, practically all automakers experienced double-digit gains during the first month of fall. Ford Motor Co. jumped 23%. GM’s volume averaged out at a 17% increase, while Toyota, Nissan North America, American Honda, Fiat Chrysler and Hyundai-Kia saw increases between 13 and 18 percent.

In addition, truck sales were up 24% and overall they accounted for 58% of the market share (as compared to them comprising 50% of the market two years ago).

The sales news is not completely without a shadow: Volkswagen sold 26,141 units, a mere 145 more than last year, and it had to discontinue sales as of September 18 of its 2.0-liter diesel models due to the dustup over its diesel emissions scandal. Yet even with the dismal diesel woes, sales forecasts remain strong for the rest of the year. The overall seasonally adjusted annualized sales rate came in at 18.17 million vehicles, topping August’s 17.81 million and marking the highest level since July 2005.
