2024 Volkswagen Taos

2024 Volkswagen Taos

The Volkswagen Taos was developed as the German brand’s “small package” giving us a choice in small SUVs using their signature design and know-how to entice you to own one. We reviewed one back when during its first model year and concluded that it was a “solid commuter with generous space for passengers and cargo.”

Two model years later, we were sent another Taos to see if our conclusion still holds true. In our case, you got the top-of-the-line SEL version with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Let’s see if this is still a solid choice in the smaller SUV segment.

Design-wise, the Taos continues to look like a shrunken version of the Volkswagen Tiguan and Atlas. The roofline and side glass profile almost look the same. The front end also has Volkswagen signatures with the iconic logo and deeper grille area. The rear end also follows brand design standards, with horizontal taillights, logo, and badging font. Our SEL tester wore 19-inch black-and-satin finished alloy wheels, along with a few subtle chromed finishes that are tastefully done, and an LED strip of lighting across the grille.  The Taos is a handsome small SUV with a signature modern Volkswagen look.

There had been no changes to the Taos interior. The 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster is clear to use and comprehend. That, along with the eight-inch Discover Media MiB3 infotainment screen works just fine in the Taos. The latter offers smartphone integration wirelessly as well as through two USB-C ports. The center vents are located below the screen, which could be a challenge for taller front occupants. We like the quick shifter and steering wheel, as well.

The two-tone leather seats were comfortable and supportive. The second-row seat space is large for a vehicle in its class. A tall person can get comfortable in the second row behind an equally tall driver. That is even with our tester equipped with the panoramic sunroof.

Rear cargo space is very generous for a vehicle in its class. There is 27.9 cubic feet behind the second-row seats. Fold those seats down to get a maximum cargo space of 65.9 cubic feet. However, it is not a completely flat floor from the bumper to the front seats, especially when dealing with longer items.

Powering our Taos SEL tester is a 158-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. With 184 pound-feet of torque, there is plenty of pulling power for merging onto the highway or for passing. Our tester was equipped with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission sending power to all four wheels through the 4MOTION system. As for fuel economy, we averaged 28.1 MPG.

The driving experience was made for fun excursions. The ride quality was very good on smooth surfaces, while absorbing rougher spots very well. The handling is on the soft side, so a bit more care when managing evasive maneuvers and tight situations.

The steering system is responsive with some feedback from the wheels. On-center feel is on the light side, but it can be weighed down when using the Adaptive Cruise Control system. It can do tight turns just fine. The brakes are also fine, with good pedal feel. It deliver solid stops in normal and panic situations.

Pricing for the 2024 Volkswagen Taos starts at $23,995. You have a choice of three trim levels in either front-wheel drive or the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. Our SEL 4MOTION tester came with a sticker price of $35,260.

The Volkswagen Taos is a competitive vehicle in the small SUV segment. It competes well against the Jeep Compass, Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer, Buick Encore GX and Envista, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Subaru Crosstrek, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Nissan Kicks, Mazda CX-30 and Ford Bronco Sport.

While it offers some advantages compared its competitors, the Volkswagen Taos might just be your choice in the small SUV segment. It offers a lot for those looking for a solid commuter with generous space for passengers and cargo.
