The first Volkswagen Golf was introduced in West Germany in 1974. That compact hatchback would be sold as the Rabbit when it arrived on our shores within a year’s time. It was seen as the replacement for the Type 1/Beetle in Europe and North America
Later in 1975, Volkswagen added a higher performance model called the Volkswagen GTI in Europe. This became an icon as it combined a more powerful engine with the inherent practicality of the Golf. North American customers craved this hot hatch so much, they could wait until its eventual arrival in late 1982.
In its eighth generation, Volkswagen happily still offers the Golf GTI. For 2025, it underwent a mid-cycle refresh which insiders call Mark 8.5. With small minor changes, it continues to attract loyal enthusiasts who never compromise when it comes to their hot hatch.
While it wears its evolutionary design proudly, the Mk8.5 Golf GTI received some updates. The upper grille bar and front logo are illuminated, adding more of an upmarket feel. The GTI badges are now placed on the front doors.
The rest of the Golf GTI’s exterior follows a formula that offers practicality with a sporty look. You will also find a set of LED foglamps that peek out of the lower honeycomb grille. The Golf GTI remains a four-door vehicle, plus a hatchback.
Our SE model includes a set of black diamond-finished 18-inch alloy wheels. In all, the Volkswagen Golf GTI has a signature stance that stands out in a parking lot and continues to speak to its place among enthusiasts.
The biggest change to the newest generation model is in the interior. The Digital Cockpit Pro is a fully digital instrument cluster that is customizable for needed information. A new 12.9-inch infotainment system is pretty functional, but it requires a few steps to get to some controls and settings. While the steering wheel now sports tactile controls, there are plenty of haptic touch elements throughout the cabin.
Seating in the Golf GTI is designed primarily for enthusiastic driving. The high back front seats are very supportive. The cushion and seatback bolsters lock front seat occupants down. The rear seats are comfortable for two average-sized adults – maybe three children. The cargo space can accommodate their luggage in the 19.9 cubic foot hatchback space, which is expandable with the removal of the cargo tray and folding down the rear seatbacks. If you do fold down the rear seatbacks, then you get up to 34.5 cubic feet of space.
Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It is a very responsive engine that is designed to motivate hot hatch legend. Our tester came with a seven-speed DSG transmission – both feeding power to the front wheels. The shifts are lightning quick, though you may find some long gear holds in Sport mode. We also found the exhaust note to be encouraging of more enthusiastic driving. In terms of fuel economy, we averaged 32.0 MPG.
Overall, we observed that the ride quality was very smooth and taut at the same time. There’s was not a lot of feedback on rougher road surfaces. However, you will find plenty of sharpness in the overall handling. The way it corners entices you to take a curve at speed with confidence.
The steering system is very responsive. Cornering was precise, even with a tad bit of play. On-center feel was solid. The brake pedal feel also was certainly responsive to the wheels. We experienced good stops in normal and panic situations.
The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI is available in three trim levels. Pricing starts from $32,445. Our SE tester came with a sticker price of $38,835.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is not alone in the hot hatch, or, as we call it in the U.S.A., the sports compact segment. It can be compared to the Subaru WRX, Honda Civic Si, Mazda3 Turbo, Toyota GR Corolla, MINI Cooper S Hardtop, Hyundai Veloster N and Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo.
However, this is the original “hot hatch.” The sport compact that popularized the genre worldwide. The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI continues to be the measurement for enthusiasts to gauge their want for engaged driving. The Mk8.5 continues to satisfy these drivers.
