The three-row midsize SUV market has grown tremendously, buoyed by new vehicles and a commitment to gaining more space for third row occupants. Mazda threw their hat in the ring by introducing the CX-90 a couple of years ago to replace the CX-9. They did so by making some major changes.
They went with a rear-drive-biased platform, a departure from most Mazda vehicles. They also introduced a plug-in hybrid driveline – a first for the brand. Plus, they elevated everything around it - the exterior design, interior quality, and newer technology.
The main talking point about the CX-90 is the introduction of an all-new in-line six-cylinder engine. One that was developed specifically for the new platform. It comes with a turbocharger in two power bands. One even has a mild hybrid system attached to it.
Our last time with the Mazda CX-90, we tested the PHEV driveline. Now, it’s the Inline 6’s turn. We’re just as excited to find out if this is the right choice for your CX-90.
From outside appearances, this 2026 CX-90 looks the part. Mazda’s KODO -Soul of Motion design language is apparent up front, but with a flatter front end. LED headlamp units illuminate the way on each side of the large grille. The longer roofline and gentler slope of the rear glass area define the profile. The rear end has horizontal LED taillamp units that stretch across the tailgate. 
Our Premium Sport tester adds blacked-out trim in the appropriate areas and set of black-finished 21-inch alloy wheels.
We like the premium feel of the 2026 Mazda CX-90’s cabin. It starts with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster that is customizable and easy to read. The Active Driving Display augments this information on the windshield. The transmission uses a shift-by-wire method through its stubby actuator on the center console. A 12.3-inch infotainment screen includes wireless smartphone mirroring. All of the switches and controls have an elevated feel overall. 
The Premium Sport wears leather upholstery with a subtle two-tone motif. The front seats were supportive and offered plenty of comfort. A three-place second row seat is a welcome addition There is a lot of room behind the front seats. The third row seats are accommodating for children. 
The 2026 Mazda CX-90 also offers a generous cargo space behind the third row of seats, starting with 15.9 cubic feet. If you fold down the 60/40 split third row seats, that space expands to 40.1 cubic feet. With all seats folded down, you have a maximum space of 75.2 cubic feet. 
There are two 3.3-liter in-line six-cylinder engines available the 2026 CX-90. Our Turbo S version puts down 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels.
We noticed a difference between this more powerful in-line six-cylinder engine and the PHEV we tested two years ago. There was plenty of immediate take-off with this engine, along with stronger acceleration and smooth cruising. We did achieve 24.8 MPG in our care.
As for the driving experience, we found that the 2026 Mazda CX-90 continued to provide a smooth ride and excellent road behavior. A very even keel on multiple surfaces. Handling was very controlled with solid maneuverability.
The steering system was very good with a solid on-center feel. Tight maneuvers were simply no problem. Brake pedal feel was solid and responsive. It delivered solid stops in normal, panic, and winter situations. 
The 2026 Mazda CX-90 is available with three engines, including the PHEV. In all, there are nine trim levels to choose from. Pricing starts at $38,800. Our 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport tester came with a sticker price of $56,065.
The 2026 CX-90 not just another mid-size three-row SUV. What it does is to elevate Mazda to another level with its quality and innovations.
