Every start-up company has a dream. This is Lucid Motors first fulfillment of that dream, With the backing of former automotive and technology professionals, they understood what it took to produce a vehicle that not only want – but desire. The Lucid Air sedan first came out in 2021 with many eyes upon it. They created a flagship sedan with amazing performance and astounding range.
We had a chance to drive the 2025 Air Pure – it’s most attainable offering – to see if their maturity has paid off. And, what it means for you.
The Pure is a good starting point. Every Air is designed with maximum aerodynamics. In fact, the Lucid Air Pure has a drag coefficient of 0.197. From the subtle air intakes on the front clip to the exit ports on the hood, the Air is sleek and slippery. The LED headlamp units are narrow.
Along the side is a clear shape and a near-fastback roofline. The door handles appear once you approach the Air with your key fob. The roof itself is stunning with a large amount of glass all around. In the rear, a strip of LED lightning runs horizontally across a huge clamshell trunk.
Pure models run a standard set of 19-inch alloy wheels. Our example wore the available 20-inch dark finished wheels that filled the wheel wells nicely. The Stealth Appearance Package on our tester offered dark finishes that are found on the trim around the windows. If you want a vision of what the future should be now, this Air Pure is exactly that.
The Lucid Air may appear low to match its sleek design. One can get in and out of one quite nicely. As a tall person, I needed to adjust my seat to ensure that I have ease of entry and exit. This is part of what Lucid calls its “Space Concept.”
That concept comes to life behind the wheel. It is always good to see your instrumentation right in front of you. The Lucid Air offers a flat and shapely 34-inch glass enclosed panel that encompasses the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment screen. This stretches two-thirds the way of the dashboard. Readouts are clear and provide what you need. The left screen will also show a blind spot display when you flip on the turn signals.
Most of the controls on the Air are housed on a third 12.5-inch Pilot Panel screen below the dashboard on the edge of the center console. They range from climate controls to vehicle settings and so forth. At first, it may seem inconvenient where it is positioned. However, it can be useful when you need it, as you are within reach of this screen. You can also retract it for more storage.
The Air is compatible for Apple CarPlay, which appears on the right screen of the upper panel. It also employs its own navigation system on board. There is a 3D panoramic camera view available on the same screen as part of the DreamDrive experience. You also get nine SurrealSound speakers for your listening pleasure.
Seating is for five and there’s loads of room for you and your passengers. The seats are comfortable and perfectly fitting. Upholstered in PurLuxe material, there is a feel of leather – but, it is not exactly. Headroom might be a challenge for taller drivers. Trunk space measures up to a massive 22.1 cubic feet. You also have some storage up front in the “frunk.” Between the two, you can pack for a week’s vacation on the road.
With its single rear-mounted electric motor putting out 430 horsepower, Lucid estimates it can achieve a range of 420 miles. There are other models available with dual motors snd all-wheel drive, along with more performance and longer range.
Even with the single rear motor, the Lucid Air Pure accelerates exceptionally well. Power take-off is quite immaculate. No hesitation from the throttle. You can ease into it, and it still feels correct. Cruising along the highway shows its calm side with a quiet cabin and smooth ride quality.
Can the Lucid Air handle a curve? The short answer is “yes.” Our drive loop took us on a series of semi-gentle rural roads that tested the 4,564-pound fully electric sedan’s ability to take these curves without any lean or roll. Just flat through.
That is due to a great steering rack. We found the steering to be precise with exceptional weight and feedback. On-center feel is simply fine. The turning radius was on the larger side, but not enough to do a 16-point turn when. a three-point one will do on the first try.
When it comes to electric vehicles, brakes are always a question. The answer is that they work quite well. They will stop on its own, but the brake pedal has a solid feel if you need to press it. Stops were quite good in normal and panic situations.
You do have a choice of four Lucid Air models for 2025. The lineup starts from $69,900. Our Pure example came with a sticker price of $75,150.
In its position, the Lucid Air is up against some competition in the battery-electric sedan space. It is a small space for now, occupied by the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan, BMW i5 and i7, Audi e-Tron GT, and the upcoming Volvo ES90.
If you are looking for a battery-electric sedan that is more attainable and is produced in the U.S.A., the Lucid Air is worth considering. It is that good to drive and live with.
