CPO Warranty Comparison: Every Major Brand Ranked 2026

Let's be straightforward about where new car prices are right now: they're not friendly. The average transaction price for a new vehicle crossed $50,000 for the first time in late 2025, and that number doesn't include taxes, dealer fees, or the financing costs stretched across a six- or seven-year loan. For a lot of buyers, that math just doesn't pencil out. So they start looking at used vehicles. And that's where a different kind of anxiety sets in — who owned it before? Was the maintenance kept up? What happens if something breaks six months from now?

That's exactly why a thorough CPO warranty comparison might be the most useful research you do before your next vehicle purchase. Certified pre-owned programs exist in the sweet spot between new and used: you save money by skipping the new-car depreciation hit, but you still get a manufacturer-backed warranty, a rigorous inspection, and — depending on the brand — a surprising stack of extras that some new-car buyers don't even receive. The peace of mind on a sub-zero Minnesota morning when your commute depends on your car starting reliably? That's real and worth paying for.

Not all certified pre-owned programs deliver equally, though. Some brands offer coverage that genuinely rivals a new-car warranty. Others bolt on a basic powertrain extension and market it like it's something special. Knowing the difference before you sit down at a dealer can save you from paying a CPO premium that doesn't deliver meaningful protection in return.

This guide breaks down every major automaker's certified pre-owned program sold in the United States — coverage types, duration, inspection requirements, extra perks, and what each program is missing — arranged alphabetically so you can skip straight to the brands you're cross-shopping. We've also built a full comparison table for quick scanning. Let's dig in.

Table of Contents

What Is a Certified Pre-Owned Program, and Why Does It Matter?

A certified pre-owned vehicle is a used car that has been put through a manufacturer-specified inspection process, reconditioned to meet defined quality standards, and certified for sale with an extended factory-backed warranty. The most important phrase here is "factory-backed." Dealer-certified programs also exist — where the dealership creates its own certification standard without manufacturer support — but those programs often carry significant geographic restrictions on where the warranty can be honored and don't carry the same weight as an official OEM program. For the purposes of this guide, we're talking exclusively about official manufacturer CPO programs, serviceable at any authorized dealer in the country. To qualify for most manufacturer CPO programs, a vehicle typically needs to be under five or six years old, under a specified mileage threshold (usually somewhere between 60,000 and 85,000 miles), hold a clean title history with no salvage, flood, or lemon-buyback designations, and pass a rigorous multi-point inspection conducted by a factory-trained technician. If something fails inspection, the dealer either fixes it before certification or the car doesn't get certified at all. This vetting process is meaningful — Consumer Reports found that CPO vehicles have roughly 14 percent fewer problems than standard used cars, largely because troubled units get filtered out before they reach the lot.

CPO vehicles also tend to be cherry-picked inventory to begin with. They're frequently former lease returns and well-maintained trade-ins — later model years, lower mileage, and cleaner histories than the broader used market. You pay a modest premium for that, but you're also buying from a more curated pool.

The Two Types of CPO Warranty Coverage

Every certified pre-owned warranty is structured around two distinct types of protection, and understanding both matters enormously when you're comparing programs:

  • Powertrain Warranty: Covers the engine, transmission, drive axles, and the major mechanical components that make the vehicle move. Powertrain coverage is almost always the longer of the two warranty types and the one manufacturers advertise most prominently. It does not cover electronics, air conditioning, suspension, infotainment, or most interior systems.
  • Bumper-to-Bumper (Comprehensive or Limited) Warranty: Covers nearly everything else — air conditioning, infotainment, electrical systems, fuel systems, major sensors, steering components, and more. This is the broader, more valuable day-to-day protection because it covers the systems most likely to fail and most expensive to fix. It almost always expires before the powertrain warranty does. Some CPO programs add genuine bumper-to-bumper coverage on top of factory protection; others only extend the powertrain, leaving the bumper-to-bumper portion expired.

The "Original In-Service Date" Trap You Need to Understand

Don't skip this part: When a brand advertises a "seven-year" or "ten-year" powertrain warranty, the clock on that coverage started ticking the day the vehicle was first registered as new — not the day you buy it used. A CPO vehicle that's already two years old with a seven-year powertrain warranty has five years of coverage remaining, not seven. Always ask the dealer for the vehicle's original in-service date and do the math yourself before assuming coverage extends as far as the headline number implies. A few brands — notably Porsche and Volvo — structure things differently, starting their CPO warranty from your purchase date. Those programs are inherently more valuable to the used buyer, which is part of why they command attention.

The Perks That Separate Good Programs from Great Ones

Raw warranty numbers tell only part of the story. The top certified pre-owned programs layer on extras that add genuine, dollar-quantifiable value over the ownership period:

  • 24/7 Roadside Assistance: Towing, emergency fuel delivery, jump starts, lockout service, and flat tire help. The best programs cover this for the full warranty term — seven or ten years. Others limit it to just one year, which significantly reduces the benefit.
  • Trip Interruption Reimbursement: If your CPO vehicle breaks down a certain distance from home (usually 100+ miles), the manufacturer covers hotel, meals, and rental transportation up to a stated daily limit. This benefit can be worth hundreds of dollars if you ever actually need it.
  • Rental Car or Loaner Vehicle: Coverage for a rental vehicle while your car is in for a covered warranty repair. The best programs provide an actual dealer loaner at no charge; others reimburse a daily rate toward a rental.
  • Free Scheduled Maintenance: A meaningful minority of programs include complimentary oil changes, tire rotations, or other routine services during the CPO coverage window. This is relatively rare among mainstream brands and adds real dollar value when it's offered.
  • Transferable Warranty: If you sell the vehicle privately before the CPO coverage expires, a transferable warranty adds resale value and can be a deciding factor for the next buyer. Non-transferable programs disappear the moment you hand over the keys.
  • Vehicle History Report: Most programs include a CARFAX or AutoCheck report, providing documented proof of ownership, accident, and service records.
  • Deductible Structure: Many programs charge $0 for covered repairs. Others carry a $50 or $100 deductible per visit. Over several repair visits across a long coverage window, the difference adds up meaningfully.

With that foundation in place, let's go through every major brand.

Quick-Reference CPO Comparison

Programs and specific terms do change — we've reflected the most current information available as of early 2026, but always verify specifics with the selling dealer and read the actual warranty documentation before you sign anything. So let's do a CPO warranty comparison of some of the major brands.

Before you dive into the cards below, one quick note on how to read the bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage cells below. When you see a value like "+1 yr / 12k mi," the plus sign means that coverage is added on top of whatever factory warranty the vehicle still has remaining. So if you buy a CPO car that still has one year of factory bumper-to-bumper coverage left, a "+1 yr" addition gives you two full years of comprehensive protection from your purchase date. However — and this matters — if the factory warranty has already expired by the time you buy, that "+1 yr" is all you get. The older a CPO vehicle is within its eligibility window, the less factory coverage remains to stack onto.

Brand-by-Brand CPO Breakdown

Here's a more in-depth breakdown of some of the most popular auto manufacturers and their CPO programs.

6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify182-point inspection7-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Acura's certified pre-owned program quietly punches above its class. Vehicles up to six model years old with fewer than 80,000 miles qualify after a 182-point inspection — one of the more demanding checklists in the non-luxury segment. The powertrain warranty runs to seven years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date, and a full year of additional limited warranty coverage applies from the date you purchase the vehicle. There is no deductible on covered repairs.

Where Acura earns points beyond the core warranty is in the perks. A complimentary scheduled maintenance visit — which can include an oil change, tire rotation, and brake fluid check — is included in the first year. Trip interruption reimbursement of up to $300 per day for three days, totaling $900, covers lodging and transportation if you break down far from home. Roadside assistance runs for the full warranty term. And the warranty transfers to subsequent private-party owners, which adds meaningful resale value. For buyers cross-shopping Acura against similarly priced near-luxury alternatives, the combination of a long powertrain warranty, no deductible, and transferability makes this one of the better programs in the segment.

6 yrs / 75k mi to qualify300-point inspection1-yr / 12k-mi added coverageNot transferable$0 deductible

Audi runs one of the most exhaustive inspection processes of any brand on this list — 300 checkpoints is a serious commitment to vetting the vehicle before it earns CPO status. The warranty, however, is where the program falls relative to its German luxury peers. Coverage adds one year or 12,000 miles beyond whatever factory warranty remains, though the bumper-to-bumper extension covers only a defined list of components rather than functioning as a true comprehensive policy. The additional powertrain coverage follows a similarly modest timeline.

The inspection rigor is genuine, roadside assistance is included for the warranty period, and there is no deductible. Audi's concierge services and nationwide dealer network for warranty repairs are positives. But if you're comparing Audi's CPO duration against BMW's unlimited-mileage addition or Lincoln's two-year extension, Audi falls short on coverage length. The lesson: with Audi CPO, make sure the vehicle you're considering still has substantial factory warranty remaining. If it's right at the eligibility edge, the coverage window post-purchase can be thin. The inspection quality is high; the coverage extension is not.

5 yrs / 60k mi to qualify360-point inspection1-yr / unlimited mi added coverageNot transferable$0 deductible

BMW's certified pre-owned program is anchored by two notable strengths: its inspection depth and its unlimited-mileage warranty extension. The 360-point inspection is the most thorough number in this entire comparison, and the one-year warranty addition carries no mileage cap — so however many miles you drive in that first year after purchase, you're covered. Vehicles must be under five years old with fewer than 60,000 miles to qualify, which keeps the eligible pool reasonably fresh.

Roadside assistance runs for the full CPO warranty period, and trip interruption reimbursement is included. The BMW Assist Safety Plan is available as an optional add-on for expanded connected-services coverage. The main criticism is duration: one year of additional coverage, while unlimited on mileage, is a shorter extension than what Lincoln (two years), Porsche (two years from purchase), or Lexus (up to six total years) deliver. BMW's cost of ownership and repair expenses also tend to run higher than the mainstream segment, which makes that one-year coverage window feel more consequential. The program is solid — just be realistic about what you're getting for the premium.

6 yrs / 75k mi to qualify172-point inspection6-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Buick operates within GM's unified CPO framework, sharing its structure with Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac. Vehicles up to six model years old with fewer than 75,000 miles qualify after a 172-point inspection. The powertrain warranty extends to six years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date. A one-year, 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper addition starts from your purchase date. Roadside assistance covers the full powertrain warranty period. There's no deductible, and the warranty transfers to a subsequent owner.

For a near-luxury brand at a used-car price point, Buick's CPO program is a dependable, no-surprises package. Six years of powertrain coverage is better than some mainstream competitors, the transferable structure adds resale value, and a three-month SiriusXM trial is a small but appreciated extra. Buick doesn't win any awards for CPO innovation, but it delivers on the fundamentals consistently. If you're looking at a CPO Buick Enclave or LaCrosse, the warranty foundation is solid.

6 yrs / 75k mi to qualify172-point inspection6-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Cadillac's certified pre-owned program mirrors its GM siblings — 172-point inspection, six-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, one-year/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper addition, transferable warranty, no deductible, roadside assistance for the powertrain term, and an OnStar and SiriusXM trial. The core warranty structure is solid for a domestic luxury brand.

Where Cadillac draws fair criticism is in secondary benefits. Compared to European luxury rivals with complimentary maintenance or loaner vehicles, and especially compared to Lexus's all-in approach, Cadillac's CPO program is lighter on extras. Dealers also tend to charge a higher premium for CPO status than the warranty package fully justifies — the price markup at some Cadillac stores can reach $2,000 to $4,000 above comparable non-certified inventory. If you can find a CPO Cadillac with a modest premium — under $1,000 over non-certified comparables — the six-year powertrain warranty and transferability make it worth having. At higher premiums, the math gets harder to justify.

6 yrs / 75k mi to qualify172-point inspection6-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Chevrolet is probably the brand with the most widely available CPO inventory across Minnesota — CPO Silverados, Equinoxes, Traverses, and Colorado trucks cycle through the market constantly. The program covers vehicles up to six model years old with fewer than 75,000 miles, with a 172-point inspection, six-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the original in-service date, and a one-year/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper addition from your purchase date. No deductible, transferable warranty, and roadside assistance through the powertrain coverage window. OnStar and SiriusXM trials are included.

The program is transparent and straightforward — what you see is what you get. The one-year bumper-to-bumper addition is shorter than you'd get from Honda or Toyota for a comparable vehicle, but the six-year powertrain term is better than several mainstream competitors. For truck and SUV buyers in particular, where powertrain repairs are the most expensive, the six-year mechanical protection is meaningful. CPO Chevrolet is a reliable workhorse program at a reasonable premium.

Chrysler / Dodge / Ram / Jeep (Stellantis)
Search CPO on CarSoup →
5 yrs / 75k mi to qualify125-point inspection7-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$100 deductible

All four Stellantis consumer brands — Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Jeep — operate under the same CPO umbrella, with consistent terms across the lineup. The seven-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the original in-service date is the clear headline: it effectively adds two years of powertrain protection beyond the standard five-year/60,000-mile factory coverage, and roadside assistance covers the full powertrain warranty term. For buyers considering a CPO Ram 1500 or Jeep Wrangler who drive far from dealer locations, that long roadside coverage is genuinely valuable.

The program has real weaknesses, though. The 125-point inspection is the least thorough on this list — most competitors run 150 to 230 points — which raises questions about what might slip through. The bumper-to-bumper addition of three months or 3,000 miles provides almost no meaningful protection beyond the factory coverage. And unlike most programs here, Stellantis CPO charges a $100 deductible per covered repair visit, which adds up over years of ownership. Evaluate the Stellantis CPO primarily on its powertrain protection strengths; temper expectations on everything else.

6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify172-point inspection7-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Ford's certified pre-owned program — Ford Blue Advantage — has one genuinely distinctive feature: it offers two tiers of certification (Gold Certified and Blue Certified), and the Blue tier can certify vehicles from competing brands, including Honda, Toyota, BMW, and dozens of others. For Ford-branded Gold Certified vehicles, the program covers models up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles, backed by a 172-point inspection, a seven-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the original in-service date, and a more comprehensive bumper-to-bumper extension based on the certification tier.

There's no deductible on covered repairs, 24/7 roadside assistance covers the full powertrain warranty period, and the warranty transfers to subsequent owners. Ford's service network is one of the largest in the country, which means warranty claims are easy to process no matter where you are. For buyers comparing a CPO Ford F-150 or Explorer against a CPO Ram or Chevy equivalent, Ford's seven-year powertrain term matches Ram and beats Chevy's six-year ceiling — without the $100 deductible that Ram charges. A solid program with excellent geographic reach.

5 yrs / 60k mi to qualify173-point inspection10-yr / 100k-mi powertrainNot transferable$0 deductible

Genesis's certified pre-owned program is one of the most overlooked values in the luxury segment, largely because the brand itself is still building recognition in the United States. Under normal used-car circumstances, Genesis's factory powertrain warranty doesn't carry over to subsequent owners — but the CPO program restores that coverage, granting access to the original 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the vehicle's first registration date, plus whatever remains of the five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage. That's extraordinary powertrain protection by any standard, luxury or otherwise.

The extras are premium-grade. Genesis provides complimentary loaner vehicles during covered repair visits — an actual loaner, not a rental reimbursement — through its Genesis at Home concierge framework. Trip interruption reimbursement runs up to $250 per day. Roadside assistance covers the full 10-year/unlimited-mileage powertrain warranty term. There is no deductible. ConsumerAffairs ranked Genesis third overall among CPO programs. The program's two practical limitations are its narrower dealer footprint compared to mainstream brands, and its non-transferable structure. But as an ownership-period value proposition in the luxury bracket, Genesis CPO is exceptional.

6 yrs / 75k mi to qualify172-point inspection6-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

GMC runs the same certification framework as Chevrolet and Buick: 172-point inspection, six-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the original in-service date, one-year/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper addition from purchase, transferable warranty, no deductible, and roadside assistance through the powertrain coverage window. OnStar and SiriusXM trials are included. The program performs consistently across GMC's truck-heavy lineup — Sierra pickups, Yukon SUVs, Acadia crossovers.

For truck buyers specifically, the relevant comparison is often GMC vs. Ram vs. Ford. GMC's six-year powertrain ceiling sits one year below Ford and Ram's seven-year terms, but GMC has no deductible and a longer bumper-to-bumper addition than Ram's three-month coverage. The transferable warranty also gives GMC an edge over programs that lock warranty benefits to the original CPO buyer only. If truck reliability and long-term resale value are priorities, CPO GMC earns its consideration in the cross-shop.

Honda — Top Pick, Non-Luxury
Search CPO Honda on CarSoup →
6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify182-point inspection7-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Honda's certified pre-owned program — now branded HondaTrue Certified — is one of the most consistently lauded programs in the industry, and the recognition is earned. Vehicles up to six model years old with fewer than 80,000 miles qualify after a 182-point inspection. The powertrain warranty runs to seven years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date. A two-year bumper-to-bumper warranty extends from the factory warranty expiration to 100,000 total miles (or one year/12,000 miles if the factory warranty had already expired at purchase). And roadside assistance covers the full seven-year/100,000-mile powertrain window — longer coverage than many luxury brands offer in this category.

Two complimentary oil changes in the first year of CPO ownership is a genuinely useful perk — that's real money back in your pocket in year one. Trip interruption coverage of up to $300 is included if a breakdown strands you far from home. The warranty transfers to subsequent private-party owners, and there's no deductible on any covered repair. Edmunds, U.S. News, and Consumer Reports consistently place Honda CPO among the top two or three programs available at any price level. The combination of Honda's long-term reliability record with the industry-leading warranty perks makes this a particularly smart buy: you're getting excellent protection on a vehicle that statistically is less likely to need it — which is arguably the best position to be in.

Hyundai — Top Pick, Non-Luxury
Search CPO Hyundai on CarSoup →
6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify173-point inspection10-yr / 100k-mi powertrain$50 deductible

Hyundai's certified pre-owned program is the headline act in the non-luxury segment, almost entirely because of its 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty — the same industry-leading coverage attached to new Hyundai vehicles, now available on a used car at a meaningful discount from new-car prices. That's three additional years of powertrain protection beyond what most competitors offer. Roadside assistance matches the full 10-year/unlimited-mileage term. One additional year of bumper-to-bumper coverage is layered on top of whatever factory coverage remains.

The perks package backs up the headline warranty: rental car reimbursement of up to $35/day for 10 days, trip interruption reimbursement of up to $100/day (maximum $500) if broken down 150+ miles from home, and a 90-day SiriusXM trial are all included. The program carries a $50 deductible per covered repair, which is a minor but real cost over years of ownership. It's also non-transferable to a subsequent owner, which limits resale value relative to Kia's transferable equivalent. Automoblog named Hyundai CPO the best CPO warranty program in 2025, and multiple other rankings echo the finding. For buyers prioritizing maximum powertrain protection on a non-luxury budget, there's nothing better in this segment.

5 yrs / 60k mi to qualify167-point inspection6-yr / 75k mi or unlimited mi coverageTransferable$0 deductible

Infiniti's CPO program has an interesting warranty structure tied to mileage at the time of certification. Vehicles certified with fewer than 15,000 miles at the time of sale receive a six-year/75,000-mile warranty from the original in-service date. Vehicles certified above 15,000 miles receive a six-year/unlimited-mileage warranty from the original in-service date — which is often the better deal for buyers who drive a lot, since there's no mileage cap. Both structures effectively add two years of comprehensive protection beyond Infiniti's standard four-year/60,000-mile factory bumper-to-bumper warranty.

The 167-point inspection is solid, the deductible is $0, and roadside assistance runs for the full warranty period. A complimentary maintenance visit — covering an oil change and tire rotation — is included in the first year. The warranty transfers to a subsequent owner, which is a meaningful differentiator from many luxury brands. Infiniti represents a lower-cost entry point into the luxury CPO segment compared to Lexus or BMW, and when you factor in the extended bumper-to-bumper coverage and transferability, the value proposition is compelling for the right buyer.

Kia's certified pre-owned program shares the same 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty as Hyundai and pairs it with what Kia calls "Platinum" comprehensive coverage — essentially a broad bumper-to-bumper equivalent — for one year or 12,000 miles from your purchase date. That Platinum coverage applies to almost all vehicle assemblies, making it more expansive than the typical one-year limited warranty most non-luxury brands add. Roadside assistance covers the extraordinary 10-year/unlimited-mileage powertrain term.

Trip interruption reimbursement is included at up to $925 — one of the highest dollar limits in this comparison — and the $50 deductible per repair applies throughout the coverage period. The key advantage Kia holds over Hyundai's otherwise comparable program is transferability: the Kia CPO warranty can pass to a subsequent private-party buyer, which Hyundai's cannot. Edmunds and U.S. News both rate Kia's CPO program among the top three available. For buyers who value maximum powertrain protection, a high trip interruption ceiling, and the flexibility to sell with warranty coverage intact, Kia's program is a very hard case to argue against.

7 yrs / 100k mi to qualify165-point inspection1-yr / unlimited mi added coverageNot transferable$0 deductible

Land Rover's Approved Certified Pre-Owned program has one of the most generous eligibility windows in this comparison — up to seven model years old with fewer than 100,000 miles — which opens the door to a wider inventory selection than most brands allow. For buyers seeking a CPO Defender, Range Rover Sport, or Discovery at a meaningful discount off newer models, that eligibility breadth matters. The 165-point inspection is thorough, and the one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty extension carries no mileage cap, which is better than fixed-mileage additions from some competitors.

Roadside assistance and concierge services are included for the warranty period, and a vehicle history report is provided. The warranty does not transfer to a subsequent owner, and Land Rover's reliability record is more mixed than some luxury brands, which makes the warranty protection genuinely important rather than just reassuring marketing. If you're considering a CPO Land Rover, doing your research on the specific vehicle's service history and existing factory coverage is especially worthwhile. The program's broad eligibility and unlimited-mileage structure are real advantages; the reliability variable is the thing to watch.

Lexus — L/Certified  ★ Best Overall CPO Program
Search CPO Lexus on CarSoup →
6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify161-point inspectionUp to 6-yr / unlimited mi bumper-to-bumper$0 deductible

L/Certified by Lexus is the benchmark against which every other CPO program gets measured. U.S. News named it the Best CPO Program in 2024, and multiple automotive publications consistently place it at the top of their rankings. The warranty structure is elegant: if the vehicle still falls within its original four-year/50,000-mile factory bumper-to-bumper period, Lexus extends that coverage to six years from the original in-service date with no mileage cap. If the factory warranty has already expired, Lexus grants two additional years of comprehensive bumper-to-bumper protection from your purchase date, again with no mileage limit. Either way, you receive at least two years of unlimited-mileage comprehensive coverage.

The perks package is what genuinely separates L/Certified from all competition. Four complimentary factory-recommended maintenance services are included within the first two years or 20,000 miles — covering oil changes, tire rotations, and multi-point inspections. A loaner vehicle is provided during covered repair visits at the dealer; this is not a rental reimbursement but an actual loaner from the dealer's fleet. Trip interruption reimbursement covers up to $200 per night for three nights plus a rental car for up to five days. Roadside assistance is included for the full warranty period, and there is absolutely no deductible on any covered repair. The only meaningful trade-off is non-transferability: the L/Certified warranty doesn't pass to a subsequent owner, so if you tend to sell vehicles before they age out of coverage, some of the value disappears. For buyers who keep their vehicles, Lexus's CPO program is in a class of its own.

Lincoln — Most Underrated Program

6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify200-point inspection2-yr / unlimited mi bumper-to-bumper7-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Lincoln's certified pre-owned program deserves far more attention than it gets. While the brand doesn't have Lexus's reliability mystique or BMW's brand cachet in the CPO marketing conversation, the warranty package Lincoln offers competes directly with the best programs in the luxury segment. The warranty adds two full years or unlimited miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage beyond the factory warranty — double what most luxury competitors add — and pairs it with a seven-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the original in-service date. The 200-point inspection is among the most comprehensive on this list.

What elevates Lincoln's program beyond the raw numbers is the service experience. Concierge pickup and delivery is included — a Lincoln representative comes to you when your vehicle needs service, rather than requiring you to bring it to the dealer. Loaner vehicles are provided during covered warranty repairs. Trip interruption reimbursement is included. Roadside assistance covers the full warranty period. And in a rare combination for a luxury brand, the warranty transfers to a subsequent private-party owner, adding meaningful resale value that non-transferable programs at BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz cannot match. Lincoln CPO rewards buyers who do their homework — the program quietly outperforms its market position on almost every measurable dimension.

6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify160-point inspection7-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Mazda's certified pre-owned program mirrors Honda's in structure and earns comparable praise from automotive analysts. The powertrain warranty runs to seven years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date. A one-year/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper addition starts from your purchase date. Roadside assistance covers the full seven-year powertrain term — a better duration than several programs from higher-priced brands. The warranty transfers to subsequent owners, and there is no deductible on covered repairs. Vehicles must be under six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles, inspected across 160 points.

Mazda's reliability ratings have improved substantially in recent years, making a CPO Mazda — especially the CX-5, CX-50, or Mazda3 — an attractive option. Trip interruption coverage is included, and a SiriusXM trial rounds out the extras. Edmunds describes Mazda's CPO program as essentially on par with Honda's: the same rare and valuable combination of long powertrain coverage, full-term roadside assistance, transferability, and a zero-deductible structure. For a mainstream brand at used-car prices, Mazda CPO is a well-constructed program that doesn't cut corners where it counts.

6 yrs / 75k mi to qualify165-point inspection1-yr / unlimited mi added coverageNot transferable$0 deductible

Mercedes-Benz's certified pre-owned program has notable strengths and notable limitations sitting side by side. On the positive side, the one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty addition carries no mileage cap — better than competitors who cap additional coverage at 12,000 miles per year. The 165-point inspection is thorough, no deductible applies on covered repairs, roadside assistance is included, and the mbrace connected services trial adds technological utility for equipped vehicles.

The concern is coverage duration. Mercedes adds only one year of additional protection, and the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty is four years/50,000 miles — one of the shorter baselines in the luxury segment. If you're buying a CPO Mercedes that's already approaching the edge of its eligibility window with an expired factory warranty, you could end up with as little as one year of total bumper-to-bumper coverage before the vehicle is completely unprotected. The program also doesn't transfer. For buyers considering a CPO Mercedes, the most important due diligence is ensuring the vehicle you're looking at still has significant factory coverage remaining. ConsumerAffairs notes that Mercedes and Audi don't truly offer meaningful CPO bumper-to-bumper extensions comparable to what Porsche, Lexus, or Lincoln provide.

5 yrs / 60k mi to qualify230-point inspectionUp to 5-yr / unlimited mi bumper-to-bumperTransferable$0 deductible

MINI's certified pre-owned program surprises people who assume that a fun-sized, premium-priced small car wouldn't come with top-tier CPO terms. The 230-point inspection is the most thorough number on this entire list — more checkpoints than any other brand covered here. The warranty is structured around the vehicle's original factory coverage: if the vehicle is still within its four-year/50,000-mile factory bumper-to-bumper window, MINI extends that protection to five years from the original in-service date with no mileage cap. If the factory warranty has expired, MINI adds an additional year of unlimited-mileage coverage from your purchase date.

Trip interruption reimbursement of up to $1,000 is the highest limit in this entire comparison, and 24/7 roadside assistance runs for the full warranty period. The warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners — rare in the premium segment and a genuine value-add at resale. There is no deductible on covered repairs. U.S. News and several other publications have rated MINI's CPO program among the top five available in recent years. For buyers who want a distinctive, enthusiast-friendly vehicle with serious CPO protection behind it, MINI's program earns high marks at almost every evaluation point.

7 yrs / 100k mi to qualify160-point inspection10-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Mitsubishi's Diamond Advantage CPO program benefits from one of the most powerful warranty foundations in the industry: the brand's 10-year/100,000-mile factory powertrain warranty carries through to CPO vehicles. For buyers who find a CPO Mitsubishi Outlander, Eclipse Cross, or Galant with years of that warranty remaining, the protection level is genuinely extraordinary for the price point. No deductible applies on covered repairs, and the broad eligibility window — up to seven years old with fewer than 100,000 miles — means a wider selection of inventory qualifies than most brands allow.

Roadside assistance covers the full powertrain warranty term with unlimited mileage, provided the breakdown involves a covered powertrain component — an important nuance in the fine print that buyers should understand before assuming full-coverage roadside for any breakdown. The bumper-to-bumper coverage reflects whatever remains of the original factory five-year/60,000-mile window. Secondary perks are lighter than Honda or Kia. Automoblog ranked Mitsubishi's CPO warranty second overall in 2025, right behind Hyundai — a well-earned recognition for a brand that doesn't get enough credit for the depth of its powertrain protection.

6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify167-point inspection7-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Nissan's certified pre-owned program is a dependable mid-tier offering that delivers more than it sometimes gets credit for. Vehicles up to six model years old with fewer than 80,000 miles qualify after a 167-point inspection. The powertrain warranty runs seven years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date, and a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty is added from your purchase date. Roadside assistance — towing, jump starts, flat tire help, and fuel delivery — is included for the full seven-year/100,000-mile powertrain window. A CARFAX vehicle history report is provided with every CPO Nissan, and rental car reimbursement is available during covered warranty repairs.

There's no deductible on covered repairs, and the warranty transfers to subsequent owners. The program sits solidly in the middle of this comparison — more generous than Subaru on bumper-to-bumper coverage and better on roadside duration than Toyota, while not quite reaching the perks level of Honda or Kia. For buyers focused on Nissan's truck and SUV lineup — the Frontier, Pathfinder, Armada, or Titan — the seven-year powertrain warranty on a well-maintained CPO vehicle is a meaningful financial safety net.

Porsche — Porsche Approved  Top Pick, Luxury
Search CPO Porsche on CarSoup →
230-point inspection2-yr / unlimited mi B2B from YOUR purchase date$0 deductible

Porsche Approved earns its top-tier status among luxury CPO programs for one architectural reason above all others: the warranty starts from your purchase date, or from the date the factory warranty expires — whichever comes later — rather than from the vehicle's original in-service date. That structural difference is enormous in practice. On most other programs, buying a three-year-old vehicle means inheriting three years of countdown already spent. With Porsche Approved, you receive two full years of bumper-to-bumper coverage with no mileage limit, starting fresh the day you take delivery.

Every Porsche new vehicle comes with a four-year/50,000-mile factory bumper-to-bumper warranty, so CPO coverage effectively extends total protection to six years with no mileage cap — all of it comprehensive. The 230-point inspection is among the most thorough in this comparison, roadside assistance is included for the full two-year CPO term, and there is no deductible on covered repairs. ConsumerAffairs ranks Porsche Approved second overall behind Lexus. For buyers who found a CPO Cayenne, Macan, or 911 that's already two or three years old, the "starts fresh for you" feature of Porsche Approved is a genuinely premium benefit that no other major luxury brand replicates as cleanly.

5 yrs / 80k mi to qualify152-point inspection7-yr / 100k-mi powertrain$0 deductible

Subaru's certified pre-owned program has a strong powertrain warranty — seven years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date — and a clean, no-deductible structure with 24/7 roadside assistance for the full powertrain coverage period. The 152-point inspection is thorough, and the program includes a CARFAX report, a three-month SiriusXM trial, and a one-year Starlink Safety Plus connected services subscription for equipped vehicles. Vehicles must be under five years old with fewer than 80,000 miles to qualify.

The notable gap is bumper-to-bumper coverage. Unlike most CPO programs that add at least one year of comprehensive protection, Subaru's program only provides whatever factory bumper-to-bumper coverage remains from the original three-year/36,000-mile window. If that's already expired — which it frequently is by the time a vehicle enters the CPO market — you get zero additional bumper-to-bumper protection. The warranty also does not transfer to a subsequent owner. Subaru does offer two optional upgrade tiers (Classic and Gold Wrap-Around plans) that add more comprehensive component coverage and trip interruption benefits, but these cost extra beyond the base CPO price. For buyers who prioritize powertrain protection specifically, Subaru is a reasonable option. For comprehensive coverage, Honda, Toyota, or Mazda will serve better without requiring upgrades.

6 yrs / 85k mi to qualify160-point inspection7-yr / 100k-mi powertrainTransferable$0 deductible

Toyota Certified Used Vehicles — TCUV — is among the most trusted names in the CPO market, and it earns that trust partly through association with Toyota's industry-leading reliability record and partly through a solid program structure. The eligibility window allows vehicles up to six model years old with fewer than 85,000 miles — one of the more generous mileage limits in this comparison — and every vehicle passes a 160-point quality assurance inspection. The powertrain warranty runs to seven years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date, and a one-year/12,000-mile comprehensive limited warranty applies from your purchase date. No deductible, transferable to subsequent owners.

Rental car reimbursement is available during covered warranty repairs. Roadside assistance is included — though Toyota's roadside coverage runs for just one year after purchase, which is significantly shorter than Honda's or Mazda's full seven-year coverage and a meaningful practical disadvantage for buyers who plan to keep the vehicle long-term. A CARFAX vehicle history report is included. RepairPal estimates that Toyotas cost their owners just $633 annually in maintenance and unplanned repairs, well below the industry average — which means the CPO warranty often functions more as a confidence-builder than a frequently-used safety net. For buyers who want a reliable vehicle with a solid warranty and Toyota's massive nationwide service network, TCUV is a consistently excellent choice.

6 yrs / 60k mi (newer models)100+ point inspection1-2 yr added coverage (varies by model year)$0 deductible

Volkswagen's certified pre-owned program has a tiered coverage structure based on model year. For model year 2018 and newer vehicles, CPO adds one year or 12,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper warranty beyond whatever factory coverage remains. For model year 2017 and older vehicles, the program provides two years or 24,000 miles of additional coverage. VW TDI diesel models from model year 2016 and newer receive particularly generous treatment: a two-year/unlimited-mileage warranty, which is an exceptional offering for diesel buyers who tend to drive high mileage.

Vehicles must generally be under six years old with fewer than 60,000 miles to qualify for the primary program. The inspection process covers over 100 checkpoints, which is less thorough than most competitors but not negligible. Roadside assistance and trip interruption are included, with no deductible on covered repairs. The warranty does not transfer to subsequent owners. VW's CPO program is most valuable for buyers targeting newer-model-year vehicles with remaining factory coverage, where the one-year addition layers onto substantial existing protection. For older VW models at the edge of eligibility, the overall coverage duration post-purchase is thinner.

6 yrs / 80k mi to qualify170-point inspection1-yr / unlimited mi from YOUR purchase date$0 deductible

Volvo's certified pre-owned program makes a clear buyer-friendly choice: the warranty starts from your purchase date, not from the vehicle's original in-service date. One year of unlimited-mileage comprehensive protection begins the day you drive off the lot, which means you know exactly what you're getting regardless of the vehicle's age within the six-year eligibility window. That's a structurally honest approach that Porsche also uses, and it benefits the buyer in ways that date-of-manufacture timers do not.

The 170-point inspection is solid, roadside assistance covers the one-year warranty period, and Volvo On Call connected services — including remote diagnostics, emergency call functionality, and navigation assistance — are available on equipped vehicles. No deductible applies on covered repairs. The warranty does not transfer to a subsequent owner. Volvo's reliability has improved meaningfully in recent years, which makes the one-year warranty term feel more like a coverage floor than a serious limitation. It's a clean, honest program — you know what you're getting and exactly how long it lasts. Buyers who want longer coverage from their Volvo CPO should factor the remaining factory warranty into their purchase decision and target vehicles with more factory coverage still intact.

Five Things to Do Before You Sign Any CPO Deal

1. Get the Original In-Service Date in Writing

Ask for the vehicle history report from the dealer and locate the exact date the car was first registered as new. Then do your own math on remaining coverage. Don't rely on the dealer's verbal summary of how much warranty is left — verify it yourself with the actual date and the program's stated terms.

2. Read the Warranty Booklet, Not the Brochure

The marketing material is written to close a sale. The warranty booklet is the legal document. The exclusions section specifically — what's not covered — is where the real differences between programs emerge. Ask for the actual warranty documentation, and read it before you sign, not after.

3. Negotiate the CPO Premium

Consumer Reports and Kelley Blue Book both confirm that the CPO price markup is often negotiable. Research what a comparable non-certified vehicle costs, identify the specific benefits the CPO status adds, and make a case for a reasonable premium based on those benefits. If a dealer is asking $3,000 over non-certified comparables for a program that adds one year of bumper-to-bumper coverage, that math deserves scrutiny.

4. Factor in Transferability Before You Decide

If you plan to sell the vehicle within the CPO coverage window, a transferable warranty is worth a measurable amount in resale value. A buyer choosing between two otherwise equivalent used vehicles will pay more for the one that comes with factory warranty protection in place. If you're buying with a five-year ownership plan, transferability matters less — but it's worth knowing before you commit.

5. Consider the Dealer Network

A CPO warranty is only useful if there's an authorized dealer within a practical distance to honor it. For mainstream brands with dense dealer networks — Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, Honda — this is rarely a concern. For less common brands or buyers in rural areas, confirm there's an authorized service location within reasonable range before you make the purchase. An expiring warranty that's difficult to use is worth less than the paper it's printed on.

FAQs

What is a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle?

A certified pre-owned vehicle is a used car that has passed a manufacturer-sanctioned multi-point inspection, been reconditioned to meet quality standards, and comes backed by an extended factory warranty. The key distinction from dealer-certified programs is manufacturer support — official CPO programs are honored at any authorized dealer nationwide and carry the full weight of the automaker behind them.

Which brand has the best CPO warranty in 2026?

Lexus consistently earns the top overall ranking thanks to its L/Certified program — up to six years of unlimited-mileage bumper-to-bumper coverage, two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, loaner vehicles during covered repairs, and $850 in trip interruption benefits. Among non-luxury brands, Hyundai and Kia are the leaders with 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties. Honda, Mazda, MINI, Porsche, and Lincoln round out the top tier across different price ranges and buyer profiles.

Does CPO warranty coverage start from when the car was new or when I buy it?

This varies by brand and is one of the most important questions to ask. Most powertrain warranties start from the vehicle's original in-service date — meaning coverage has been counting down since before you bought it. Porsche and Volvo are notable exceptions that start their CPO warranty from your purchase date, making their programs inherently more valuable to the used buyer. Always confirm which structure applies to the specific vehicle you're considering.

Are CPO vehicles worth the higher price?

For most buyers, yes — particularly when the CPO premium is reasonable and the brand offers strong secondary perks. CPO vehicles typically cost about 1.8% to 10% more than comparable non-certified used vehicles, but they include extended warranties, multi-point inspections, roadside assistance, and documented vehicle history. Consumer Reports data shows CPO vehicles have about 14% fewer problems than standard used cars, largely because problem vehicles are filtered out during the inspection process.

Is a CPO warranty transferable if I sell the vehicle?

Transferability varies significantly by brand. Kia, Honda, Mazda, Acura, Infiniti, MINI, Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Ford, Nissan, Toyota, and Mitsubishi all offer transferable warranties to subsequent private-party buyers. Lexus, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volvo, Hyundai, Subaru, Genesis, and Volkswagen do not transfer. A transferable warranty can meaningfully increase a vehicle's resale value.

What is typically NOT covered by a CPO warranty?

CPO warranties universally exclude regular maintenance items: oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations, brake pads, wiper blades, and other consumables. Damage from accidents, flooding, improper modifications, or neglected maintenance is excluded. Some programs exclude tires entirely. Always read the warranty booklet's exclusions section carefully — not just the marketing summary — before you commit to a purchase.
